The 17th edition of the prestigious Headies Awards, themed “Back to Base,” made a triumphant return to Nigerian soil after a two-year international hiatus. Held at the Landmark Event Centre in Lekki on Sunday night, the ceremony was a vibrant showcase of the talent, culture, and spirit that define Africa’s music scene.
The dynamic hosting duo of actress and media personality Nancy Isime and veteran broadcaster IK Osakioduwa set the tone for the evening with their charisma, humour, and infectious energy, ensuring a night to remember.
Celebrating African Excellence
The Headies 2025 spotlighted remarkable achievements across the Nigerian and African music industries, honouring artists, producers, and creatives who have made indelible marks over the past year. The night was electrified by thrilling performances from stars like Qing Madi, L.A.X, Odumodublvck, Kcee, Shallipopi, Flavour, Nasboi, Magnito, and Tanzania’s Juma Jux, among others.
Juma Jux not only wowed the audience with a memorable live set but also clinched the award for Best East African Artiste of the Year, triumphing over heavyweights like Diamond Platnumz, Bien, and Bruce Melodie.
Emotional Tributes and Special Moments
A poignant highlight of the evening was the posthumous honour bestowed upon the late Mohbad, who was awarded Best Street-Hop Artiste for his hit single “Ask About Me.” His wife and young son, Liam, accepted the award on his behalf, prompting an emotional standing ovation. Mohbad also received multiple posthumous nominations, including Best Collaboration and Afrobeats Single of the Year for “Egwu” with Chike, reflecting his lasting impact on the industry.
In another touching tribute, veteran artist Kcee received a Special Recognition Award for his 26-year journey of contributions and cultural influence in Nigerian music, celebrated with a heartfelt presentation.
Drama on Stage
The ceremony wasn’t without a bit of drama. Celebrated rapper Odumodublvck, who won the coveted Next Rated award, refused to leave the stage after organizers attempted to cut short his acceptance speech. Accompanied by his mother and team, Odumodublvck insisted on finishing his speech, eventually getting his microphone switched back on — a move that sparked mixed reactions online but ultimately underscored the passion and emotions surrounding the night.
